Twenty20 and the Long Term Future of Cricket

Twenty20 cricket is by far the shortest form of the game and was first introduced in England to try and bring the game closer in duration to that of other popular sports such as football.

It was introduced to create a lively form of the game which would be attractive to both spectators at the ground and viewers on television and as such it has been very successful.

Each team bats for one innings which comprises twenty overs and because the matches are not as long as traditional forms of cricket the play is condensed into a much shorter period resulting in plenty of drama and action packed entertainment.

The birth of Twenty20 cricket has exposed the sport to a much wider audience who probably find the longer versions of the game like test cricket and even one day cricket far less appealing in comparison.

Because Twenty20 has been such a success all over the world there are some observers who feel that this type of cricket is the way forward and will eventually overtake the five day test format in terms of popularity.

Test cricket has always been regarded as the purest form of the sport and any deficiencies in players batting or bowling technique usually gets exposed at this level in contrast one criticism of Twenty20 cricket is that it can be considered something of a slog fest with correct playing technique not being an essential requirement.

While there is no shortage of excitement and action with Twenty20 matches it should not be considered a threat to the test or one day formats as fans in the entire cricket playing nations all over the globe will continue to demand these longer and more established versions of the sport.
